Christmas stuff in the shops already. Lists to make, a thousand cards to buy, write, post. It seems to get sooner every year. Home. You’ve just put the shopping down and have to help the kids with their homework, which is a bit of a miracle to you as you were never much good at your own when at school yourself. While the washing machine does the sports kits you’re busy sewing a button on a school uniform. The last thing you can think of is yourself. Dinner to cook, dog needs a walk. No poetry in muddy puddles tonight! Later, they have to clean their teeth and stay in bed long enough for you to have a warm drink and just sit down – and yet! Glimpses of something different pop up again, brushing past you almost accidentally. The feeling of what it would be like to have your dream is like a tickle in your mind, but fills you with excitement. You find yourself there, smiling, being, doing, succeeding …
You snap out of it. What were you thinking?
You can be a mum or a dad and have dreams and ambitions. It’s not over unless you want it to be. You may not have a load of qualifications, or a fancy cv, but you can still achieve things. I know because it happens for people every day, whether it’s getting a qualification, losing weight, handling a situation at work, starting a new business. It all starts with you. The only thing you have to do is decide which version of you, you want to be, but sometimes this question is too hard. Sometimes you may need to talk about it to see if there is a way forward for you. Harmless to find out, isn’t it?
